Shingles roofs come in two main materials, wood and asphalt, and are an affordable and effective option for roofing a range of buildings. The most common wood used in shingle roofing is cedar, which creates an attractive finish and is long lasting and naturally resistant to rotting.
Cedar wood is also resistant to insects that like to chew or burrow in wood, but can be an expensive option though with prices typically around $70-$100 per square, and the level of fire protection is low compared to other roofing options.
Asphalt shingle roofs are a more popular option as they almost half the price of wood shingles, around $50 per square, and offer a higher level of protection against the elements and also fire. Asphalt also comes in a much greater range of colors and designs, but it vulnerable to very cold and windy climates and will wear more quickly in these sorts of conditions.
